The Council on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression (CSOGIE) promotes the development of social work curriculum materials and faculty growth opportunities relevant to sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, and the experiences of individuals who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or two-spirit.
Activities include the LGBTQ+ Caucus/CSOGIE Networking Reception, the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) Award, and the CSOGIE Mentorship Breakfast for LGBTQ+ doctoral students and junior faculty members.
The CSOGIE also has the following functions:
- To further the creation and availability of social work education curriculum materials, resources, consultation, and faculty, student and professional development opportunities related to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression (including all of the associated individual, intersectional, and systemic issues) and the experiences of persons who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, sexual-expansive, gender-expansive, two-spirit, and all others under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella.
- To identify and advocate for policies, procedures, and activities as well as recommend policy statements that advance inclusion and prevent impediments to full and affirming participation within CSWE, social work education, and social work practice for persons who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, sexual-expansive, gender-expansive, two-spirit, and all others under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella.
- To facilitate mentorship of doctoral students and junior faculty who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, sexual-expansive, gender-expansive, two-spirit, and all others under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella.
- To collaborate with other CSWE councils and commissions, national/international social work organizations, and national/international LGBTQIA organizations to promote the inclusion of those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, sexual-expansive, gender-expansive, two-spirit, and all others under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella within the profession of social work in furtherance of our charge.
A Call to Fight Against Racism
CSOGIE has issued a call to action in the fight against racism, White supremacy, state violence, and the intersections of cissexism and heterosexism. This call to action reinforces our commitment to our continued work as a council to increase inclusive practices and policies in social work education. The award recognizes scholarship that contributes to knowledge about sexual orientation and gender identity and expression; the individual and systemic issues associated with these topics; the development of social work curriculum materials and faculty growth opportunities relevant to sexual orientation and gender identity and expression; and the experiences of individuals who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and/or two-spirit. 2-QTPOC Award
CSOGIE and the Council on Racial, Ethnic, and Cultural Diversity (CRECD) present the Two-Spirit, Queer, and Trans People of Color (2-QTPOC) Award. The nominee's contributions could be significant and outstanding peer-reviewed scholarship that enriches the knowledge-base of Two-Spirit, Queer and/or Trans People of Color (2-QTPOC) communities, their needs, and effective interventions; an activity or program that fosters or sustains a positive and inclusive culture and climate for 2-QTPOC communities in social work education; and/or mentorship of 2-QTPOC faculty members and/or students. The NAME Steps: How to Name and Address Anti-LGBTQIA2S+ Microaggressions in Social Work Classrooms: CSOGIE has developed a guide to support colleagues in better recognizing and intervening in microaggressions toward LGBTQIA2S+ populations. The guide introduces the NAME Steps (notice, acknowledge, make space, engage) with more detail and examples for application. It also outlines steps and strategies to enhance comprehension and includes a list of references and resources for further learning and study. Download the guide.
Social Work Student Speak Out report: Social Work Students Speak Out! The Experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Students in Social Work Programs examines the needs of LGBTQ+ students in social work programs and the barriers they face. A total of 1,018 LGBTQ+ students in 51 states and Canadian provinces took part in the study. Recommendations to address the needs of LGBTQ+ students at the national, institutional, and program levels are included. Download the report.
